On July 30, 2026, the SMART & STRONG Project gave a presentation for participants of the 42nd Advanced Training Course for Medical and Public Health Administrators, a training program for mid-level officials of Thailand’s Ministry of Public Health. The presentation introduced a Japanese model of community-based care for older people, as well as initiatives in Thailand implemented through the SMART & STRONG Project with reference to this model. The presentation focused on the project’s experiences in developing community-based health and care systems for older people. In July 2026, Mr. Hajime Tsuboi, Director Gereral of JICA Yokohama Center, together with JICA staff member Ms. Chihiro Kamei, visited Yugawara Town in Kanagawa Prefecture. For more than 60 years, the Japan Overseas Cooperation Volunteers (JOCV), now part of the JICA Overseas Cooperation Volunteers programme, has promoted citizen-based international cooperation by supporting socioeconomic development in partner countries while fostering mutual understanding through people-to-people exchanges. Inspired by this model, Thailand has also implemented overseas volunteer programmes for many years and now dispatches volunteers to Japan. On 2 July 2026, a six-member delegation from the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) Thailand Office, led by Ms. Akari Ichigi, visited Thap Ma Subdistrict Municipality, Rayong Province, to exchange views on strengthening community-based elderly care and exploring future opportunities for collaboration.
