On December 1, 2023, the morning edition of the Yomiuri Shimbun, a Japanese Newspaper, published the article about initiatives of 'Dementia Cafe' in Thailand through this SMART & STRONG Project and the Study Tour in Japan in which Medical Dr. Thitinan Nakpu from Beung Yitho Municipality participated.
The article is available to read online (in Japanese language) from the website below: "yomiDr.: Yomiuri Shimbun's Medical, Health and Care website."
The Article's Tentative Summary in English
Amid rapid aging, various Asian nations are turning their attention to Japan's elderly care practices. Representatives from civic groups in Thailand, Vietnam, China, and Singapore, aiming to contribute to the healthcare sector were invited by organizations like the "Japan Center for International Exchange (JCIE)" to learn from Japanese care methods. In Kamakura City, Kanagawa prefecture, these Asian foreign representatives learned about the residents' engagement in community activities by elderly citizens who have dementia on-site.
Such learning of Japanese elderly care by other Asian countries has begun to extend. For instance, Bueng Yitho Municipality, Pathum Thani Province in Thailand, started the initiatives of "Dementia Cafe" in May 2022, inspired by the learning through the city clerks' visit to Japan in 2019.
The municipality noticed that about half of the elderly citizens using their elderly-care facilities have symptoms of dementia, fostering growing interest in local government policies supporting dementia within the communities.
In these ways, Japanese practices are becoming a reference for dementia support and community development regarding the population aging in Asia.
